When we think of powerful women in leadership, we often reference modern CEOs, political trailblazers, or renowned activists. But one of the most transformational female leaders in history is found in the pages of scripture—Deborah. She wasn’t just a prophetess; she was a judge, a military strategist, and a woman who led her nation with wisdom, courage, and faith.
As I step into my role as a Scholar–Practitioner–Leader and guide women through personal and professional transformation, I find myself constantly returning to Deborah’s story. Not because she was perfect, but because she was positioned—and she showed up.
So what can we, as modern-day women leaders (especially in midlife), learn from Deborah?
1. You Don’t Need a Title to Be Called
Deborah didn’t wait for a formal title. She led because she was appointed by purpose, not politics. Many women today disqualify themselves from leadership because they don’t see themselves as “ready.” But leadership isn’t about having everything figured out—it’s about being willing.
Lesson: Stop waiting for permission. You’ve already been called.
2. Leadership Requires Wisdom and Strategy
Deborah’s decisions weren’t impulsive. She led with discernment. She advised, instructed, and executed strategic decisions during one of Israel’s darkest times. She reminds us that great leadership flows from clarity and conviction.
Lesson: Before you make the next move, get quiet enough to hear the strategy. Wisdom is always your first weapon.
3. Courage is a Choice
Deborah didn’t just deliver divine messages—she went with Barak into battle. Courage wasn’t just what she spoke; it was what she lived. As women, especially those of us navigating leadership in our 50s and beyond, courage doesn’t always look loud. Sometimes, it looks like consistency. Sometimes, it looks like starting over.
Lesson: Leading with heart is not a sign of weakness. It’s proof of strength.
